Three English ladies ministering in October, 2010

Anne Rowntree has come from England many times to share the things God has taught her. We have appreciated learning about God cleansing land, like ending the drought in Kenya, and about the God-given human spirit we have received.

This year her pastor, Brenda Taylor, and daughter/worship leader, Juliette Dawn, will be coming with her October 22 – 30.

They will be leading worship in Cane Ridge, Kentucky, where God sent revival for the Second Great Awakening.

Brenda has developed a Worship Experience based on the components of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness (Book of Exodus) and will be leading us through this experience in a Louisville church.

Julie writes and performs worship songs and shares her poetry.

The three of them will be ministering in Madisonville, Owensboro and Russell Springs, Kentucky, as well as Evansville, Indiana.

Contact us for further information.

Experience has shown that prayer makes a difference at election time.

When we lived in Connecticut, we had a few chances to attend Kingdom Life Christian Center in Milford. KLCC was helping the community with computer education, furniture and many other services. One service was prayer, not just for the members, but for local politicians.

The city of Bridgeport lost its mayor in a scandal. One of the candidates to replace him asked KLCC for prayer in their Sunday service and Bridgeport elected a Christian as mayor. The same happened with another city north of Bridgeport, where a wife on the city council felt her husband should run for mayor. Despite his lack of experience in politics and lack of public exposure, he felt God wanted his involvement. The church prayed for him in the church service and he too was elected.

I approached a few church contacts here in Louisville to offer prayer in a Sunday service for the prayer requests of Greg Fischer and Hal Heiner, candidates for mayor of Louisville. At this point I was added to the prayer team for Hal and am delighted to ask God to give him and his campaign what the Lord has in mind.

I Timothy 2:1-2: First of all, then, I urge you to offer petitions, prayers, intercessions, and expressions of thanks for all people,

for kings, and for everyone who has authority, so that we might lead a quiet and peaceful life with all godliness and dignity.

Media-driven or Scripture-directed?

Often our prayers are “media-driven” because TV, radio, news and internet are so pervasive. We can easily be misled to think new items are what is on God’s mind too. Media have to keep finding new things to attract our attention. What do media think are important? The values they think we have are Power, Money, Sex, Popularity, Entertainment, Justice, Goodness (sort of that ranking). Are these God’s values? Do they motivate Him and attract His attention? I doubt it.

Psalm 101 is known as “The Prince’s Psalm.”

1 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD, will I sing. 2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. 3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. 4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person. 5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. 6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. 7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. 8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.

I see the following insights into the heart of David as Ruler of Israel:

He worshipped the LORD, who is the only one perfectly combining mercy and judgment.

He was primarily concerned with the integrity of his heart, making it attractive to his God and fitting him to act wisely.

His eyes reveal his focus: no evil thought, thing or person. As Paul says, “Our battle is not against flesh and blood…” (Ephesians 6)

His eyes reveal his godly discernment: he recognizes godly, trustworthy friends and advisors.

He has no toleration for frauds, liars or scam artists.

Let us pray that our politicians have the same heart and determination as King David, the Psalmist, had. We can ask the Lord’s grace for their media presentation as well.

May righteous hearts produce righteous deeds which are publicly rewarded.

The Bad, Old Days in Europe when Communism trapped the Hungarians

Sharon and Martin Van Horn moved to Vienna, Austria, in 1981 to share the Gospel with Austrians. At that time Vienna was the end of the Western World, since it was situated at the Iron Curtain separating the West from the Soviet Communist empire. Budapest was the capital of Hungary, and to reach it an American had to wait in long lines at the border to buy a visa and have his car trunk and undercarriage inspected by police. Hungarians dreamed of freedom they could only hear on the radio or read about.

One Wednesday night a mysterious, bearded Hungarian with a heavy accent visited the prayer meeting at our little Austrian church. Ferenc Varga lived in Traiskirchen refugee camp. It turned out he was not a communist spy, but a man who had moved to Guatemala and become a Christian. Now he wanted to reach Hungarian refugees, who had escaped to the West, with the Gospel. Could I help?

For two years I drove vanloads of Hungarians, who mostly spoke no English, to our church or a local facility where I shared the wonders of a Bible and the Jesus Christ that they had had no chance to learn about. I had the privilege of baptizing five men before they moved on to America or Canada. It was a wonderful opportunity that God opened to me and our coworkers.

Then came the Fall of the Iron Curtain

Then in 1989 to the surprise of all observers, the Communist Empire fell. Czech students visited Vienna to give us pieces of barbed wire. I actually have this small segment of the Iron Curtain.

A hungarian man withstood the pressures of communist atheism and pastored a small church. Now he has over 200 churches, one of them in Vienna, Austria. They are known as the Hit [Faith] Churches. On April 4, 2010, Easter was celebrated on the public square in Budapest by 1,300 church members.

We have been set free: from atheism, communism, sin, death, fear, the Devil’s lies and unbelief. Celebrate together with these european believers. Savor the freedom that Jesus has given us all.

We read in the Gospels how Jesus Christ went all over Israel bringing healing and deliverance. He also delegated his authority to his disciples, who also proclaimed the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and healed the sick, cleansed the lepers, raised the dead and cast out demons. We are Jesus’ disciples today and we want to see him do the same things wherever we go.

Saturday evenings we are studying the Scriptures and the materials on healing prayer by Charles and Frances Hunter, and by their daughter, Joan Hunter. We are excited to see Jesus answer prayers for healing.
